A trick I love, to make sure you get the body-care you need on the schedule that works for you, is to book your next massage right after you get one.
Regular Maintenance: Not just for cars!
Bodies are high maintenance...We need to eat, sleep, exercise, bathe, stretch, repair our cells and relax regularly to stay healthy. An hour on the table feels, to your body, like a 2 hour nap, boosts immune function and balances stress hormones (like cortisol, the notorious driver of belly-fat-storage). So during busy season if you can't get enough sleep every night, getting massage on a regular schedule can help keep you healthy and control stress hormones.
For women, booking a monthly massage around your period can help with cramps, moodiness/depression, food cravings, low back pain, indigestion and tension headaches. Massage helps regulate hormones, especially when combined with the right aromatherapy oils. Women who suffer from PMS and PMDD do very well to book massage regularly, just before or at the onset of those symptoms. If you're going through other hormonal changes like pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause, post-partum depression or thyroid issues, there is nothing like the soothing touch of massage therapy to bring you back to center and help regulate your energy. The more regularly you do it, the more benefits you'll get over time.
The Gift of Standing Appointments
Standing appointments are pre-booked appointments that fall on regularly occurring intervals, like every Thursday, last Friday of the month or every other Sunday. I have several long-time clients who swear by standing appointments to keep them feeling their best. (I even had one lady who had a standing appointment with me for over 10 years!)
When you have a busy schedule, it's such a gift to plan your obligations around self-care. Knowing that you have a weekly or monthly massage appointment to look forward to can get you through all sorts of stressful situations. And when it comes to managing chronic conditions like PMS, migraines or depression, booking massage on a predictable schedule can do wonders to reduce symptoms and help you bounce back faster than usual. Plus every week/month/6 weeks (or whatever time interval works best for you), you have something to look forward to--a thought that on its own can help reduce your stress levels!
Got a trip or important deadline coming up?
Try pre-booking a massage for right after your deadline, or a day after your travels. Massage is the perfect re-set button that helps you bounce back from jet lag and the aches and pains from carrying luggage, sleeping on foreign beds, working too long at your desk or sitting long hours on a cramped plane.
If your schedule is unpredictable…
I now offer concierge style appointment reminders. You choose what week you'd like to come back, and you'll get a text message or email closer to that date, reminding you to schedule. That way you're not bound to a specific appointment time in advance, but you'll still stay on a regular schedule.
If you do pre-book an appointment and realize closer to the date that it no longer works, not to worry. Just get in touch a few days before and it is easily moved. Even if you have to push it back a whole week, at least you'll get that reminder to book sooner than later, so you don't suddenly realize it's been 3 months since your last "monthly massage."
